Keeping Pets Happy During the Summer Months

When the daytime temperatures hover around 90 with high humidity, many dog owners are left wondering how to keep their pets happy and healthy while still providing them with appropriate activities. Let’s start by saying most dogs should not be going for long walks in the middle of the day. Dogs with longer coats and shorter noses are at a higher risk of heat stroke and should be spending most of the day inside (hopefully with air conditioning). But without physical activity some dogs can become destructive. Here are some ways to help your pooch stay happy during hot summer days.

Take early morning walks.

Your pup can still have a long walk to sniff, explore and exert themselves as long as you start off early in the morning before the temperatures rise above 80 degrees

Use a ball feeder.

Instead of providing the meal in a bowl, invest in a ball feeder or puzzle feeder for your pup. This way they get mental stimulation while they enjoy their meal.

Teach them a new trick.

Another form of mental stimulation is through training. Teaching your pet a new trick can help keep them engaged. Try teaching them left from right when they shake hands, teach them how to speak on command or even a game of hide and seek indoors.

Spend 10-15 minutes practicing commands.

Spending as little as 10 minutes daily practicing known commands is another way to tire your pet. Believe it or not that little bit of time not only reminds them of their commands but also makes them think. “Doggie sit ups” are a fun way to practice – have your pup sit, then lay down, then sit, then lay down again. Repeat for as many as 5-10 reps and your pooch will be panting!

Keeping your pet engaged during the hot summer days can be a fun and easy way to bond with your pooch while staying safe.
